No Jake, I Don’t Want My OTV
J.J. Jackson | May 23, 2009
Jake Tapper is dropping further and further down the list of people the White House and Barack Obama want anywhere near the President or covering his actions. Apparently in a dry run to see how Obama Television, television controlled by the the Big O himself, works the White House staff shut reporters out of a visit by the University of Connecticut Lady Huskies – the NCAA’s women’s basketball champions and produced their own coverage of the event.
On April 27, President Obama welcomed the University of Connecticut Lady Huskies, who had just won the NCAA women’s basketball championship.
After the event, President Obama went to the White House basketball court to shoot hoop with the Lady Huskies. The White House press corps was not allowed to attend.
…
Now we know why: Obama White House officials decided to do their own media report on the visit, complete with cuts, interviews, and chyrons identifying who’s speaking.
Also, just like a network, they have their own little logo!
Mr. Tapper has the video on his blog if you care to watch.
Of course there are probably some good reasons why the President didn’t want any formal press coverage. There was probably no teleprompter nearby and he didn’t want his extemporaneous remarks about his jump shot not being good enough to qualify him for even the Special Olympics to be picked up and plastered all over the nightly cable news by the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.

Dear Mr. Jackson,
I too am concerned about this change in coverage of
presidential events. It is not unprecedented, but it smacks
of what critics have called ‘Obama in perpetual campaign
mode.’
Instead of independent reporters and their camera crews, we
now have government employees releasing ‘The Best of Obama’
to the news outlets, who feel forced to run them in their
news broadcasts. I expect and hope the reporters will be
the first to complain that these episodes constitute an arbitrary
‘denial of access’ and that their employers will not broadcast
‘news’ not collected by their own staff.
