Mother’s Day

Most popular Irish songs and ballads, (see below for an Irish musical treat), are of the maudlin variety, an overdone sentimentality born of centuries of life lived under Britain’s heel and overflowing with tales and legends of wars, bloodshed, persecution, and starvation.
Now that I am renewed from that cathartic rip of the English, tomorrow is Mother’s Day.
Now, granted, the first step toward becoming a mother, concepton, is usually a pleasurable experience, whether pregnancy results from planning or whether it’s the consequence of a wild toss in the hay or a drunken one night stand. But the final step, giving birth, isn’t very much fun. That’s an understatement, ladies!
After birthing comes the even more arduous task of mothering, a job that goes on indefinitely. New moms are wont to naively think it lasts for eighteen years or so, which time span is a mere pittance compared to the reality.
Of course, some women should never have taken that initial step of rolling in the hay or wherever they rolled and they end up becoming brutal, tyrannical, or worse. Others become what teens in broken marriages call step-monsters. However and fortunately, they are relatively few and far between.
Then there are the women who make people wonder how they could have produced any progeny at all. Such people as the late Betty Friedan,
of The Feminine Mystigue and N.O.W. fame, Hillary Clinton,
of Bubba Clinton fame, and virtually the whole crew of radical feminist fame come to mind. They prove that conception and birth are sometimes God’s little way of cracking a joke. To their credit, they went along with the joke.
But, again, tomorrow, May 10th, is Mother’s Day when we should all honor our mothers, living or deceased. They merit honoring if for no other reason than enduring the ordeals of pregnancy and childbirth.
Most likely, most deserve it also for the many years they put up with their little cherubs who subsequently matured into adults who then went on to continue the whole process.
That’s it for this excursion into semi-sentimentality except for the promised treat in honor of Mother’s Day: ”A Mother’s Love Is a Blessing,” the lyrics and music of which are provided here: http://www.stinalisa.com/Blessing.html.
