News from Iraq

When my son went to Iraq on his first tour of duty in 2003, he made sure he set up a computer for me to use instead of the little internet “toy “that I had…as he called it. I was thrilled to receive any word from him. He was in Mosul and I read and scanned all news for information on the city. He was there when the mess tent was bombed and we all held our breath, happily finding out he skipped lunch that day. On another occasion we were contacted by one of our local TV stations, friends and relatives that he and others were shown shaking hands with then Secretary of Defense Rumsfield on a visit to one of Sadam’s palaces. We were thrilled to see him and so proud. Time went by and soon he was home safe and sound with a very dark tan and fifty pounds lighter.
One day I was searching the internet for some information under my husband’s name, which is also our son’s name. Up pops an article about a step father and Sgt. Paul Musa. I knew it was my son but he had no stepfather. It was an article about a road side bombing that had taken place while Paul was on his first tour in Iraq. The stepfather’s son had been injured in it and our son and others were involved in it. Even though Paul’s friend was unhurt, one sadly had been killed. I was horrified at reading it. I searched until I found my son at one of his friend’s homes and gave him the news! He said he knew all about it…he was there! And that was only one of three that he had been in while on tour!!
You have to understand…he was not one to talk about his experiences there. It was shocking to me and still is. What are the chances I would find that information on the internet….unusual?
Now Paul is on his second tour of duty and in his first email he wrote….
“Iraq is a vastly different place from 4 years ago. I can see it becoming another duty station, like Korea, in the not to distant future. No mortars, no gear or weapons worn at the mess hall. Aircraft flying with lights on…seems the place is quieting down. Military police giving out tickets in a war zone, unheard of when I was up north. We just may be the group shutting the lights off and closing the door on the way out.”
Dear God, we hope and pray that that day will come soon. God bless our troops and God bless America!
