Three Houston schools aren’t holding classes today, shut down in an attempt to prevent the spread of a swine flu outbreak that has spread to at least two area residents, including the city’s first case announced today.

Houston’s health department said a 10-year-old Houston boy has recovered without hospitalization for what officials characterized as a mild case. The U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention today confirmed the boy had swine flu.

The city said the boy had not traveled to Mexico, which so far has been the epicenter of the outbreak. Family members also appear uninfected. The city declined to provide further information, including where the boy attends school.
