Watch it burn.
Carolyn Hileman
There is in this great country of ours a grand piece of paper, an old piece of paper on which inspired words were written by men who believed in them so much that they put their names on it and as such wrote their death sentences and our future. On that paper is spelled out what our country stands for, who is in charge of it and our responsibility to this great Nation. Somewhere along the way perhaps when we left school to start our lives we forgot about it, we forgot what it stood for, what it provided for. We started hearing people on the news tell us that we had certain rights and rather than bother to go look we accepted them as fact and of course since none of us wanted to do our homework since we no longer were required to they started telling us that we did not have some rights and we accepted that as well. They day that we were told that things were on that piece of paper that were not that piece of paper began to burn and each false assertion that has been believed has caused the fire to grow.
We are given certain rights, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to keep and bear arms, freedom of assembly, freedom to petition, freedom of the press, the right to privacy, and not to be cruel an unusually punished, or compelled self incrimination. This piece of paper also tells us that all rights not specifically given to the federal government belongs to the citizenry or the states. However, there have been movements in Congress and Senate to silence free speech of those they do not deem worthy of that right. The fairness doctrine and homegrown terrorist act to name two, two bills aimed solely at denying a certain part of this country their first amendment rights. Freedom of religion remains under attack solely on the basis of a portion of a letter taken out of context to the Danbury Baptists, and to this day even Supreme Court Justices either believe there is a clause in the constitution that calls for a wall between church and state which is not there or they are to afraid to say otherwise, once again squelching the first amendment right of freedom of speech.
The right to keep and bear arms, in some states is a joke; there are laws in those states preventing the citizenry from owning a hand gun or any other gun for that matter. The Bill of rights specifically states that we have that right, it does not refer it to the states or to the federal government but they have taken it upon themselves to usurp the right of the people. Freedom of assembly is only allowed if you get a permit and the opposing group is not bigger and does not threaten violence, once again this is a right spelled out in the Bill of rights, not a choice given to the states or your community but a right that belongs to you. Each and every time one of these rights are taken away some more of that paper burns and a small piece of America burns right along with it. In just this last year alone, we have seen our elected officials trample all over the people that elected them. We watched as they saddled us with enormous debt to bail out banks even though the people were calling in day and night trying to stop it, we have been forced to bail out the automakers, there are rumors that we will be bailing out the Texas oil companies next, and a little more of America has been burned.
There was a big fight over amnesty for illegal immigrants and despite the trickery and deceit we managed to fight that one back and put out a small fire, yet America continues to burn. People who have lost their homes to fire will tell you that when the fire starts they run around doing everything they can to put it out, but after a while it seems to grow even more no matter what they do and then they just stand back and watch it burn. That my friends is what we are doing right now, we have splashed water on the fire, we have hooked up the water hose, we have stood so close to the flames that we have singed our clothing and yet the fire still seems to be growing. It is at a critical stage, a point that if we do nothing it intends to burn to the ground and we the people have chosen to watch it burn.
