The Weak Kneed Republicans
J.J. Jackson | January 29, 2009
You expect President Obama to not like Rush Limbaugh and you expected him to “kindly” advise Republicans that there is no need to listen one of the most influential conservative voices in America as he recently did. You also expect Limbaugh to fire back and make Obama wet his Presidential pants. But you don’t expect Republicans to side with Obama … or do you?
Well, there is at least one weak kneed Republican in the House who doesn’t like Limbaugh mucking up his huggy fest with the new President:
Rush Limbaugh may command a large following, but his caustic comments Monday about the GOP’s congressional leadership have at least one Republican House member defending his colleagues and offering an unusually candid critique of the talk radio powerhouse and his fellow commentators.
Responding to President Obama’s recommendation to Republican congressional leaders last week that they not follow Limbaugh’s lead, the conservative talkmeister said on his show that Obama is “obviously more frightened of me than he is Mitch McConnell. He’s more frightened of me, than he is of, say, John Boehner, which doesn’t say much about our party.”
Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., did not take kindly to this assessment in an interview with Politico Tuesday.
“I think that our leadership, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, are taking the right approach,” Gingrey said. “I mean, it’s easy if you’re Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or even sometimes Newt Gingrich to stand back and throw bricks. You don’t have to try to do what’s best for your people and your party. You know you’re just on these talk shows and you’re living well and plus you stir up a bit of controversy and gin the base and that sort of that thing. But when it comes to true leadership, not that these people couldn’t be or wouldn’t be good leaders, they’re not in that position of John Boehner or Mitch McConnell.“
Awww. Poor baby. Did big old mean Rush say something you didn’t like and you think might get in the way of the Republicans in Congress continuing to screw up? Boehner and McConnell are not good leaders. They have shown no real leadership and have only hinted at having such talents in the past few weeks. Do not poo poo what Rush and others do as simply, “throwing bricks” or just “ginning the base.” You will do so at your own peril and, dare I say it, simply to hide the fact that when it comes to conservative leadership in Washington, about the closest we have is Rep. Ron Paul and that isn’t saying much considering he is in the blame America first, put our head in the sand and it will all go away crowd.
