Man Freezes To Death Because He Waited Too Long To Pay Bill

J.J. Jackson | January 28, 2009

This is one of those teachable moments that I both look forward to commenting on and also loathe commenting on because I know that I am going to piss off some people who have knee jerk reactions and cannot lay blame where it rightfully belongs. This teachable moment comes from Bay City, Michigan and courtesy of Marvin Schur, who we are sure to be told is a WWII vet even though that is irrelevant to the story.

Mr. Schur hadn’t paid his electric bill and Mr. Schur was in the process of having his electricity shut off in the middle of winter. I know, that sounds cruel, but if you don’t let electric companies shut off service when people do not pay their bills then you will have a lot of people (anyone that is smart anyway) not paying their bills. Sadly, Mr. Schur froze to death:

BAY CITY, Mich. — TV5 and WNEM.com has learned about new circumstances surrounding Marvin Schur’s death.

A limiter on Schur’s electric meter is being blamed for the man’s death. Now Bay City said it will notify customers before their power is shut off.

Michigan’s Attorney General Mike Cox said Tuesday he would review the case.

One local lawyer said the question remains: Who is accountable in the war veteran’s death?

The answer to that question, based on the information in this report, is clear. Mr. Schur is at fault. He is the one that did not pay his electric bill and apparently didn’t do much to work things out either.

Czuprynski, a constitutional attorney, said the city could be liable. “I really think it’s a disgusting situation and it’s a shame that Bay City is put beneath this light.”

Punishing people for not paying their bills is a “shame?” Someone is looking for a post in the Obama administration me thinks.

Czuprynski said Bay City could be liable for Schur’s death.

Translation: “Give me a jury that I can convince deadbeats should be allowed to continue to get services without paying and Bay City “could be” liable.

And then of course there is the typical outrage:

A neighbor who lives across the street from Schur is angered that the city didn’t personally notify the elderly man about his utility situation.

Ah, but he was!

Bay City Electric Light and Power sent Schur a shutoff notice through the mail a few weeks ago. Then crews placed a shutoff notice on his front door.

The report also notes that the claim is that on the table was an electric bill with a large amount of money attached to it supposedly to demonstrate that Mr. Schur was intending to pay the bill which makes this moment even sadder. But, had the bill been paid on time it would never have come to this. The only alternative is to socialize the utilities and force the tax payers to pay for everyone’s electricity.

Let this be a lesson kids. Pay your bills on time. And if you don’t have the money, find it in any legal manner you can and make sure to work things out with your creditors if there is a delay. Otherwise the consequences may be dire, but entirely your fault.

Tell me I am wrong if you want. However I will tell you that you will be perfectly content under President Barack Obama’s vision of America if it comes to pass if you do.

As a vet myself, I kept wondering why it was important to keep pointing out that the man was a WWII vet. I think it was just done to try and sway opinion away from the fact that he didn’t pay his electric bill and that is why his power was cut and that is why he froze to death. It’s sloppy journalism in my opinion and I agree, this certainly is a teachable moment.

Pay your bills and stop complaining when you or others are punished for not doing so. There is no free lunch.
