Jimmy Carter The Slum Lord?

Jimmy Carter is the well known face of Habitat for Humanity, an organization that builds inexpensive homes using volunteer labor for low income families. Over the years however Habitat for Humanity has come under fire for the quality of their homes and now the crap may be hitting the fan:

RESIDENTS of a model housing estate bankrolled by Hollywood celebrities and hand-built by Jimmy Carter, the former US president, are complaining that it is falling apart.

Fairway Oaks was built on northern Florida wasteland by 10,000 volunteers, including Carter, in a record 17-day “blitz” organised by the charity Habitat for Humanity.

Eight years later it is better known for cockroaches, mildew and mysterious skin rashes.

A forthcoming legal battle over Fairway Oaks threatens the reputation of a charity envied for the calibre of its celebrity supporters, who range from Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt to Colin Firth, Christian Bale and Helena Bonham Carter.

The case could challenge the bedrock philosophy behind Habitat for Humanity, claiming that using volunteers, rather than professional builders, is causing as many problems as it solves.

Honestly I do not have a problem with the concept behind Habitat for Humanity. I think the idea is certainly noble. But when situations like this arise you do have to question how they are going about achieving those goals and ideas.

But there is something else to consider too. These homes are basically given away to people that have little financial means. These are often (not always but often) the same sorts of people that live in your normal Section 8 housing project and who do not care one lick about keeping up the property they have been essentially given. Would I doubt that some of the problems are caused by lazy tenants that don’t care about maintaining their homes or who don’t know how? Nope. Not one bit.

On topic and intelligent comments are always welcome as are humorous observations. But liberal talking points with no basis in reality, off topic comments, spam and advertisements are not. Even though you may think you are an intelligent liberal by spouting such things, you probably are not. Keep this in mind as trolling is prohibited and will result in your comments not being approved and comments informing us how much we are a bunch of idiots because you say we are or espousing hate towards the truth are often moved directly to the official “I Hate You/You’re An Idiot” thread. Save us all the time and post there directly if you have a comment that would meet those criteria. Commentators reserve the right to mock claims about how liberal ideas, such as higher taxes, actually work and how conservative and right wingers, are NAZIs, racists, sexists, etc. and will do so with great regularity.
