Are Women Better Drivers Than Men?

J.J. Jackson | December 19, 2008

It seems for the past month I have been gets a bizzare amount of email proclaiming that men are the most horrible drivers out there despite the “myth” that women are the ones that are really bad drivers. Was there some sort of study released that claimed this?

So, because of these many emails, from where or why I don’t really know (probably from goofy liberals who think I’m a sexist who hates women), I have done a study for the past two weeks here in the Pittsburgh area. What I did was for two weeks log every reckless driver I encountered while driving as well as those that just violated general traffic laws. I also took random samples of drivers (20 at a pop) to get an idea for exactly who is driving.

My random samples (10 in all over the course of the two weeks) revealed that, when I drive, those driving around me are 55% men, 43% women and 2% were unable to have their sex determined by just looking at them.

Here are the results of the drivers that acted badly:
Cut me off in traffic*:
Women – 10
Men -3
Undetermined – 2

*cutting me off is defined as passing with in two feet of my bumper while traveling in excess of 25 MPH

Failed to signal before changing lanes**:
Women – 15
Men -6
Undetermined – 4

**each of these incidents was able to be confirmed that the person indeed did not signal and not that they simply had one burned out signal. They perhaps had two burned out turn signal bulbs, but if that is the case they deserve to be listed here for being so lazy (or stupid) as to never have replaced either.

Failed to stop at clearly visible stop sign:
Women – 5
Men -2
Undetermined – 1

Failed to yeild when presented with such a sign:
Women – 9
Men -5
Undetermined – 1

Wildly weaved in and out of traffic:
Women – 2
Men -1
Undetermined – 0

Failed to pay attention at a traffic light and did not move after light had turned green for more than 5 seconds:
Women – 2
Men -0
Undetermined – 1

Tailgated me at speeds in excess of 35 MPH:
Women – 21
Men -11
Undetermined – 2

And the last category, while technically not having to do with driving per se is …
Discarded a cigarette butt out window and littered:
Women – 19
Men -7
Undetermined – 5

Now, this is of course not a scientific study by any means and perhaps women in the Pittsburgh area are worse drivers than women other places. I don’t know. But thank you to all of you who have written me because those emails encouraged me to do this study and see for my self.

Funny story but just last week one of my girlfriends and I had this arguement! What made it funny was that she was ranting about how men are far worse drivers than women yet ievery time I ride with her my knuckles are white from holding on to the “oh shit” bar due to her speeding, weaving and reckless driving.

Whether your study results are true of women as a whole or not I do concur that most of the time when someone cuts me off or runs a red light in front of me it is usually a fellow woman.

    What you say seems true,
But I wonder if young blondes talking on a cell-phone
has skewed my results towards the negative.
