Times Online Questions Sightings Of Kim Jong Il
J.J. Jackson | November 9, 2008
There have been a lot of reports lately concerning the health of North Korea’s Kim Jong Il. Reports vary over his status since he has not been seen in public for quite some time. However now some pictures of the “Dear Leader” have arisen supposedly showing him alive and well. The Times Online has it’s doubts though:
It was intended to be the photograph that settled the matter once and for all — three months after vanishing from public view, and after reports that he had undergone brain surgery following a stroke, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, was alive and well.
But a close look reveals something shady around the ankles of the world’s last Cold War dictator.
While the legs of his soldiers cast a shadow at a sharp angle, the shadow of the “Dear Leader” is dead straight. In addition, there is a black line running horizontally behind the soldiers’ legs, but it mysteriously disappears behind Mr Kim.Rather than a genuine photograph, there were growing suspicions last night that the image released by the North Korean authorities may possibly be the result of digital trickery.
To see the pictures go to the link provided in the excerpt. I have looked at the three photos (2 of which are blowups of the original) and while there are reasons why the shadow of Kim Jong Il might indeed be different (such as his relation to the platform compared to others in the photo) and might indeed cause some sort of change, he appears to be standing at the same distance from the platform as everyone else. Therefore his shadow should indeed be cast the same way as everyone else. His is not cast the same however.
The photo does indeed appear to be a forgery and, after having talked to a former cold war era type who lived in the Soviet Union and who was involved in the propaganda machine within that nation, I have been told that this is probably actually a signal that something is not right in North Korea.
This source who I know used to work with doctoring photographs, and whom I have talked to many time on other issues, said, “We use to these thing that to the casual observer and our handlers would look well, but we knew would be picked up by more careful observers in west.” My source asked that I not use his name because he believes that there are still elements in Russia that wish his family harm and he is currently in the United States under an assumed name (but is here legally). He believes that using his name would expose him to retribution and I am respecting that.
He concluded by saying, “We would get severely punished by our handlers when they find out what we had done after it was pointed out by media or persons in the west. This was due to them being reprimanded harshly by their own superiors with the State machine for not watching us more closely. We never attempted to send complex messages as we would believed that such would be far too obvious as to what we were doing. Instead we would just make errors that would let the west know that what they were seeing was not true.”
He believes that this is exactly what is going on within North Korea and said that this is the sort of “mistake” no one doing such a good job on everything else in the photograph would make unless it was on purpose.
