USA Today – McCain Up By 10
J.J. Jackson* | September 9, 2008
Another poll shows John McCain and Sarah Palin are up on Obama/Biden. USA Today reports:
McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama by 50%-46% among registered voters, the Republican’s biggest advantage since January and a turnaround from the USA TODAY poll taken just before the convention opened in St. Paul. Then, he lagged by 7 percentage points.
But didn’t I just say McCain was up by 10? Isn’t that only 4%? Oh, wait – there is more:
In the new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, McCain leads Obama by 54%-44% among those seen as most likely to vote. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/— 3 points for both samples.
Previously I mentioned the Zogby poll which also had McCain up. This is a convention bounce for McCain and it will likely fade at least slightly. But it does show that when people see Obama and then McCain they much rather prefer McCain. Remember, the conventions were back to back – literally.
The question is, if Obama remains behind in the polls will he flop back to requesting more than just the standard three presidential debates? He had originally signaled that he would be open to more, but quickly backed out when polls showed him ahead. After all, why debate when you only have ground to lose right?
We’ll see how the polls continue to run over the next few weeks. But if Obama remains behind do not be surprised to see him demanding more debates all of a sudden.
