Readers Ask: Why So Much “Pro-McCain” Stuff At RightThings?

J.J. Jackson* | September 9, 2008

Visitors to this site know that I am not a McCain fan and that I am not going to vote for him in November. I’ve made that stand and will stick to it until the Republican Party gets the message that nominating a man who leans to the left as much as he leans to the right will not be tolerated and that they cannot just expect conservatives to fall in line like socialists do for the Democrats.

But I have also said that I understand that many conservatives are not willing to chuck McCain who at times seems like an actual conservative when he acts. I made this point on the Political Pistachio a few weeks ago when Doug had me on as a guest. I understand that a lot of conservatives are scared to death of Barack Obama and his policies. And they should be. I understand that many of them are planning to hold their nose and vote for John McCain as the best alternative in the race.

I think they are wrong, but I can at least sympathize with their choice. Fear is a powerful motivator for a great many people. Me? I certainly do fear what will happen to this country once we see the results of this November’s election but I am not going to let that fear paralyze me into not doing what is right.

Which brings me to the point of this post. Many people are starting to ask me why on Earth I am offering up so many “Pro McCain” designs available through my political t-shirt sites on places like Cafepress, the main site at therightthings.com and also at American Conservative Daily in our political shop.

Some of these emailers are quite indignant claiming that I should not be offering up such designs. The fact is however that I am offering an assortment of designs for many candidates to let conservatives voice their opinions. We have designs for the McCain/Palin ticket, for Chuck Baldwin and also for Bob Barr. We also have a lot of anti-Obama designs for those that want to get a little irreverent. We also offer, and it is one of our best sellers, a John McCain for el Presidente of Mexico design for conservatives that want to remind America just how bad McCain can be.

We are covering all bases this election.

Some people however appear to be upset at the large number of McCain/Palin designs compared to those of other candidates like Baldwin and Barr. The Baldwinites and the Barrbarians send me emails literally screaming at me over the disparity in number of designs available. But the answer as to why this is is simple – demand.

John McCain and Sarah Palin supporters are buying gear to support their candidates of choice in much greater numbers than those supporting Barr and Baldwin are. That being the case, they get more of the time dedicated to them than you do as a Barr or Baldwin supporter. Demand drives the supply and quite frankly those of you supporting Barr and Baldwin are in the vast minority of conservatives at this point.

You want more designs for your candidate? Start buying products and we’ll add new ones once you show us that our time, which is money, will be wisely invested on such endeavors. I would think that you would understand simple economics and stop letting your political affiliations taint your thoughts.
