The Paranoid Bear

Russia, once the hub of the former Soviet Union has never really liked the fact that it lost the Cold War. They seethed when Georgia broke away, signaling the beginning of the end of their empire. So they have fomented rebel activity in parts of the Republic over the years since in order to eventually justify an invasion of the now sovereign country.

That invasion happened and now the war of words, worthy of Soviet Era propaganda has begun.

Aug. 14 (Bloomberg) — Russia said the U.S. and other countries that armed and trained Georgia’s military share blame for the war there as a top American official said security relations with Moscow may be “adversely affected for years.”

“Those who for the sake of their political plans armed and trained the Georgian army, who encouraged the Tbilisi regime’s sense that it could do anything and face no punishment, also bear responsibility for what has happened,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its Web site.

In the U.S., Defense Secretary Robert Gates said that the war “called into question the entire premise” of the U.S.’s strategic relationship with Russia and canceled two joint military exercises with Russia scheduled for this month.

“If Russia does not step back from its aggressive posture and actions in Georgia, the U.S.-Russian relationship could be adversely affected for years to come,” Gates said.

The Russian bear has become even more paranoid over the years since its grasp on power slipped. They have been seeking any chance they could to justify reminding the world that Russia is still a force to be reckoned with especially with the United States busy fighting around the world and reminding every tin horned despot to think twice.

And while the paranoid bear continues to bluster and threaten its neighbors (former regions under its paw) like a Saddam Hussein or Mahmoud Ineedajihad would, everyone else sits around and wags their fingers at them. Bullies are always best dealt with by confrontation but the world is seemingly more ready to stand back in the face of a rising evil and once again do nothing.

This time, however, if the good people of the world stand back and do nothing, those once under the thumb of the Soviet Empire will know they must put up a more unified resistance and will. Then the question becomes will we stand with them as the paranoid bear rampages more or will we claim it is not our problem?

The isolationists who think that since they have their own liberty that no one else’s is important will say we should not interfere. But those that believe in the inalienable rights of all mankind will have to stand up and be counted.
