More than 7,000 criminal illegal immigrants in San Bernardino County jails have been returned to their home countries in the past two years. Seven sheriff’s employees working under a federal program since 2006 have been screening for illegal immigrants and expediting deportations. Sheriff’s Lt. Dennis Shaffer said the majority of those deported are serious offenders. Illegal immigrants serve sentences at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga before they are turned over to federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
