Reality Check: U.S. Military Stretched “Too Thin”?

J.J. Jackson* | July 8, 2008

Claiming that our military is stretched “too thin” has become a popular talking point of left wingers everywhere from Barack Obama to Joe Moonbat on the street.  Even those isolationist libertarians who are a minority among the libertarian movement sometims spout this talking point.

To hear them talk about the current situation, one would think that the nearly 200,000 US Soldiers in Iraq at the end of 2007 (less now) and the 25,000 in Afghanistan were all we had and that America was vulnerable to attack, unable to defend ourselves.

Far from it!

In fact, sodiers currently engaged in the two major theaters of the War on Terror represent only about 16% of the 1,368,226 (source) military men and women stationed world wide.

In Germany alone there are 57,000 U.S. soldiers sitting in a non-combat zone protecting Germany from?

In the whole of Europe there at nearly 86,000 U.S. soldiers.

In Japan there are another 33,000 U.S. soldiers.

Too thin?  Hardly.  The fact is that there are plenty of soldiers available.  Plenty to even secure our borders from illegal immigrants if we really wanted to.
