Democrats Starting to Cave on Drilling

For decades liberals (mostly Democrats but also some Republicans) have blocked major efforts to explore and drill for oil domestically. For example, the Republican Congress in the 1990’s passed a bill that would have opened up ANWR which Bill Clinton vetoed. More recent attempts met with filibusters and other procedural roadblocks thrown up by the Democratic minority before they took control of both Houses of Congress.

Now however it looks like some of them are starting to feel the heat as constituents have been burning up the phone lines to their Washington offices demanding they stop obstructing.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A top U.S. Democratic senator said in a newspaper interview published Wednesday that he would consider supporting opening up new areas for offshore oil and gas drilling.

“I’m open to drilling and responsible production,” Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin told The Wall Street Journal, adding that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid could also support the move.

Wait a minute! Just the other day Harry Reid was whining about how oil was making us “sick”! Does this mean he is now supporting making us “sick”?

Republicans say their efforts to open up new regions for exploration have been stymied by Democrats.

Democrats say energy companies are producing oil and gas from only about a quarter of the 91.5 million acres currently leased from the government.

Ah yes, the, “well they have millions of acres that they are not drill on,” defense with no consideration that not every parcel of land has oil you numbskulls!
