Win A Copy of Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas

The Doubleday Broadway Publishing Group (Random House) has once again been generous enough to provide ACD with copies of another book to give away to our readers. You can win one of five copies of Supreme Discomfort, The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas - new in paperback!
Clarence Thomas is arguably the most powerful, detested and misunderstood African American in public life. He became a household name across the nation during his Senate confirmation hearings with the “he said, she said” sexual harassment charges brought by Anita Hill. Despite all the coverage of Thomas the man still remains an enigma to this day.
In SUPREME DISCOMFORT: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas (Broadway Books; now available in paperback) award-winning Washington Post reporters Kevin Merida and Michael Fletcher, give us the definitive biography, both empathetic and disturbing, of the most controversial justice on the Supreme Court. The authors track Thomas from his poor childhood in Pin Point and Savannah, Georgia, to his educational experiences in a Catholic seminary and Holy Cross, to his law school years at Yale during the black power era, to his rise within the Republican political establishment.
Some of the fascinating new information that the authors reveal and argue include:
· Thomas often dismisses the notion the he is still affected by the Anita Hill controversy. He would have us believe that it is in the past. In fact he is downright bitter about it and keeps a mental log of those who were for him and those who were against him.
· Thomas is much more engaged in the public life of Washington, more of a political operator, than he lets on. He has intervened on behalf of stalled black Democratic judicial nominees, for example, telephoning Republican senators he knows (like Trent Lott and his buddy Orrin Hatch) to try to unclog the nominations.
· The long-festering image of Thomas as Scalia’s clone bothers both Thomas and Scalia. He has suggested privately to friends that he thinks the Thomas-Scalia comparisons are racist. Scalia tells us that he was worried all along that he would overshadow Thomas, because of the force of his personality. In this haunting portrait of an isolated and bitter man, savagely reviled by much of the black community, not entirely comfortable in white society, and internally wounded from struggles early on in childhood, the authors show us the man behind the reputation.
I have also been reading the copy that was sent for myself and have found it interesting. I certainly don’t agree with all of the conclusions of the authors, but the commentary that is provided beyond the “opinions” is certainly well researched and worthy of note to help understand a man who I think is one of the finest Supreme Court Justices we have had in a long while.
