Police many, protesters few on Day 2 of Mesa crackdown

Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies returned to Mesa on Friday to continue “Operation Ghost,” but only a small crowd of demonstrators turned out on the second day under the watchful eyes of a heavy police presence. Mesa police again focused on keeping the peace, persuading a man who was taunting Hispanic activists to leave. Five demonstrators who support the actions of Sheriff Joe Arpaio showed up on Day 2 and waved U.S. flags. “They should be in their country. What’s wrong with Mexico? There’s a beach. You guys can go fishing,” said the man, who identified himself as Dwayne Davis of Phoenix. “If I was in Mexico, I’d stay there and make my country better.”
