Multiple Schools of Bad Thought – The Source:

The following is an email I have been given permission to share. These are the comments of “The Source”, our contact in Washington, with regards to the energy crisis in America:
I’ve had a few chances to sit down with staffers of several members of Congress over the pasted few weeks and pick their brains over what is going on vis-à-vis raising gas prices. Seems there are several schools of thought coming out of the majority part in both houses.
Please note that these conversations were not with Republican staffers telling me what the Democrats were up to. These are actual Democratic staffers telling me what the Democrats are up to. These are guys and gals on the front line who are actually becoming a little peeved themselves at the current situation in Washington.
First, all of them recognize that there is a problem. Which is good. Soaring gasoline prices have them over the hot seat and the calls from their constituents wondering what is being done are this major issue 10:1 over other issues. However the Democrats are divided while being united.
All schools of thought are adamant that they are not going to do a damn thing while President Bush is in the White House if they can help it. The Democrats are united in denying President Bush any potential victory.
However one school of thought contends that if Barack Obama wins the White House in November they will, at first, make token efforts to allow enhanced drilling and exploration knowing full well that it will take 5-10 years for anything to come from it. They plan to then, after a couple years (3 or 4), try to run some jive passed the American people that, “Well, we tried the drill everywhere approach and it didn’t work,” and then will push for other “green” alternatives and fund them with tax dollars which staffers have confided, “will of course mean we will need higher taxes to fund these programs.” Then they will abandon the “drill our way out of this mess” approach and shut down much of the exploration they have already approved.
This of course has oil companies very skittish and I have been told that rumors of these plans have leaked to several of the oil companies. Possibly even on purpose. If the oil companies believe this approach will be taken they certainly won’t be very eager to explore and refine new sources and some are apparently banking on that to help bolster their case that more oil is not the solution.
Another school of thought contends that if this is the approach taken and that the American people don’t buy it (which those that adhere to it believe they won’t), they think that it will result in massive losses for their party in either 2012 or 2014 because people are getting very, to quote one staffer, “pissed off”. These guys and gals however are still not willing to give President Bush any victories and will work to stall any attempt to lift regulations and limits on drilling that currently exist until there is a Democrat in the White House but they are more willing to let us drill our way to greater supplies and lower costs.
Another school of thought wants to just junk it all and move right now to “mandating” “green” alternatives through heavy handed legislation the terms of which could include such hardnosed tactics. Some proposals floated so far in secret include banning all automotives that don’t get a certain MPG to using the law to dictate all vehicles are hybrid electric within five years.
When asked point blank, “Well what if McCain wins?” the response I was given was, “Well, it looks like we’ll be content to stall another four years.”
Right now there is a lot of pain being brought to bear on those that are on the points for many of these Representatives and Senators in Washington which those Congressmen seem to be, not oblivious too, but content to completely ignore. One staffer told me, “What do they care? They know they are in a safe seat and that they don’t have a chance in Hell of loosing in November.”
Surprised? Nope. Not me. Wouldn’t put this past being true at all.
