Lieberman Takes Aim At Obama
J.J. Jackson* | June 18, 2008
They hate to admit it, but the liberal Democrats in Congress need Joe Lieberman. Even as the more liberal members of the party tried to get him out of the Senate in favor of a more liberal candidate he still won however and without him on their side the Democrats would be precariously close to losing power in the Senate. If, for example, Lieberman would chose to caucus with the Republicans (God help us if he does because the last thing Republicans need is another flaming liberal in their ranks) it would make the Senate 50-50 with Dick Cheney holding the tie breaking vote and thus giving Republicans a majority.
Lieberman, despite being a good little liberal on social spending, has dared to wander off the reservation on several key issues including the War on Terror. That has put him at odds with Senator Barack Obama:
WASHINGTON (AP) - Joe Lieberman is fast becoming the Democrats’ public enemy No. 1.
The four-term Connecticut senator, who came tantalizingly close to being Al Gore’s vice president in 2000, not only has been campaigning for his pal, presumed Republican nominee John McCain, now he’s publicly criticizing the Democrats’ standard-bearer, Barack Obama. Lieberman has strayed before, most notably switching from Democrat to independent in 2006 to hold onto his Senate seat after a Democratic primary loss. But the latest betrayal has upset Democrats, who often answer in clipped but polite tones when asked about Lieberman. The reason: The independent still caucuses with the Democrats on most issues except the Iraq war, and he holds their slim political majority in his hands.
“There’s a commonly held hope that he’s not going to be transformed into an attack dog for Republicans,” said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., an Obama supporter.
Lieberman has wasted no time in questioning Obama’s positions on Iran and Israel, two topics on which Lieberman and McCain agree. Just one day after Obama clinched his party’s nomination, Lieberman joined Republicans on a McCain campaign teleconference call assailing Obama following his foreign policy address to a leading Jewish group.
Boy there John Kerry (who served in Vietnam in case you didn’t know), talk about working hard to demonize a man who for all intents and purposes has been working for the same socialist state you have for lo these many years! An “attack dog for Republicans”? Really? I don’t think that Lieberman could ever be considered that.
But anything to help cut down criticism of your man, Barack (raise your taxes, destroy your 401k and pension, abandon our allies) Obama huh?
