Supporters want tougher state laws against illegal immigrants.

Raleigh, NC — Immigration enforcement groups are calling on state leaders to stop making North Carolina a safe haven for illegal immigrants.

Outside the state legislative building, a few dozen supporters cheered speakers insisting North Carolina is facing an illegal immigration crisis.

William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration, warned North Carolina has a reputation for lax laws that make the state more welcoming to illegal immigrants.

Mike Visnich is a member of the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps who drove up from South Carolina for the rally. He says North Carolina is bleeding from the burden of illegal immigrants who drain taxpayer dollars for health, education, and other services.

The Minutemen, Americans for Legal Immigration, and other group members urged state leaders to keep higher education out of reach for people in the U.S. illegally.

Some supporters insist stronger laws that prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving government benefits will encourage them to return to their native countries voluntarily.
