An immigration reform organization says a recent Supreme Court ruling has made it easier for some foreign nationals who overstay their visas to remain in the U.S. legally. In a 5-4 decision, the high court ruled that someone who is in the country illegally may withdraw a voluntary agreement to depart and continue to try to adjust his or her status while in the United States. The case involved a Nigerian national who overstayed his visa and later married an American woman. Authorities wanted to force him out of the country. But in ruling in the majority in the case, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote an opinion favorable to his efforts to remain in the country.
