Don’t Laugh
J.J. Jackson* | June 14, 2008
That is what a woman was told by her boss – and if she did well she would be fired. And she was.
“I had a customer at the bar and the owner came up to me and said, ‘Please stop laughing,’ Kollios said. “We giggled — the guy at the bar and myself. And then I said, ‘Are you serious?’ And he said, ‘Yes, if you laugh again, you will have to go home.”
Kollios said she was then fired on the spot.
…
The restaurant owner said a customer did not complain about the laughing. However, he prefers the restaurant to be quiet and cozy and Kollios’ laugh prevented that from happening.
I am a big fan of private property rights and will stand by the owner’s decision to take this stand in his own restaurant. However it is still perhaps the absolutely dumbest and most bone headed reason I have ever heard for firing someone.
Listen, you’re better off not working there. Let him advertise his restaurant as what he apparently wishes it to be – “The Most Dour Place On Earth.” Perhaps on Wednesdays instead of “Happy Hour” he could have “Dour Hour” where everyone talks about what depresses them. But whatever you do, don’t you dare laugh.
