My Take On Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos”
J.J. Jackson* | May 6, 2008
I was sitting back today, thinking about a couple things and realized that I hadn’t actually given my view on Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” – a campaign designed not to support any particular Democrat but merely to prolong the primary. This despite getting several emails a day asking my opinion on it.
First, I think that party primaries should be closed. If you want a say in a party’s nominee then you should register with that party and be faithful to that party. “Open” primaries are silly in the same way that letting your nextdoor neighbor have a say in where you go to eat dinner or what car you buy is. Sure, you can get outside opinions, but in the long run only those people in the party should have final say.
Furthermore, deadlines to change party registration should be well before any primaries take place to avoid people changing registration at the last minute.
Second, I realize that in many states primaries are not closed.
Third, I find it odd how when Democrats and Independents vote for someone like the liberal McCain in an open primary it is a show of his across the isle appeal. But when Conservative voters cross party lines to vote for any Democrat it is a sign of how the system is broken or that such can now be claimed as “fraud”.
Furthermore, it is so cute to watch liberals show their goose-stepping side once again by trying to get voters to sign “loyalty oaths” or threats that they will be “watched” and dealt with if they don’t behave the way liberals demand and in ways that are above and beyond the established rules.
Fourth, I do find “Operation Chaos” hilarious because it is driving the liberals nuts that they are getting a taste of their own medicine.
Finally, I don’t support cross-over voting even in states that do allow it because I believe that only people belonging to a party should have a say in that party’s nominee. I would never do it. That does not mean however that I don’t get a chuckle out of it. It isn’t illegal so if you want to participate then knock yourself out.
Maybe we’ll finally get some reform and close the party primaries in all states come the next election.
