EL PASO — Sixteen states each have more than half a million Hispanics, contributing to the one-year increase nationally of 1.4 million, and Texas has the second-largest number of that minority group… Experts say the trends pose significant challenges and opportunities for the states and the country, including race relations, cultural relations, education and marketing. “It all started back when salsa replaced ketchup as the best-selling condiment,” said Cheryl Howard, a demographics expert and sociologist at the University of Texas at El Paso. “Hispanics used to be concentrated in definable U.S. locations.”
