Organizers said the march’s smaller turnout was likely related to a growing number of deportations in the local immigrant community. Deportations may have had a chilling effect on participation this year, they said. Prescila Gonzalez Suazo, a freshman at Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa who participated in the march as a security volunteer, said her mother was deported last year. “One day I came home from school and they said my mother got deported. We want to make Sonoma County safe for all immigrants,” she said, adding that she makes no distinction between those who are here legally and illegally. “No human is illegal,” she said, echoing a familiar refrain during the march.
