Immigration Update: House Democrats Plan to Hold Hearings
Carolyn Hileman - The Voice | April 22, 2008
Democrats control Congress, and last week House Homeland Security Committee Chairman, Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) announced hearings in the coming months on immigration issues, border security, and the Heath Shuler bill HAI has been closely monitoring. The hearings are part of a strategy crafted by House Democratic leaders to stop Republicans from getting enough support through a discharge petition to bring Shuler’s bill to the House floor for a vote. Nearly 200 Republicans and Democrats have signed the discharge petition, but 218 signatures are needed to bring it to the floor.
The committee also plans to examine the Homeland Security Department’s plans for transitioning to a new presidential administration. Hearings will explore how the department is meeting mandates of a massive law enacted last year to implement most of the unfulfilled recommendations of the 9/11 Commission.
