Get Over Reagan? Maybe Not A Bad Idea …
J.J. Jackson* | April 22, 2008
I’ve said it myself before; that conservative and Republicans need to admire Reagan but demand better than him in the future. He was, after all, a man who actually believed tax and spend liberals would be goods to their word on tax cuts and pushed amnesty for millions of illegal criminals. In essence, I guess you could say I have said that we need to “get over Reagan”. Sometimes I do think that conservatives deify Reagan more than he deserves. He was certainly above average as Presidents go, but I think some people go over board in praising him in a carte blanche manner.
Now Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is taking heat for saying the same thing:
The governor delivered his remarks to a room full of fellow red-staters at the Fund for American Studies’ annual conference and donor retreat at the Newseum.
“Nostalgia is fine and Reagan’s economic plan was good,” Daniels said. “But we need to look towards the future rather than staying in the past.” Daniels added that the GOP needed to work on uniting behind Sen. John McCain instead of constantly comparing the Arizona senator with the Gipper.
Whoa! I certaintly am not that insane though! Uniting behind John McCain is certainly not something I would ever propose! What you are saying basically Gov. Daniels is that we should move backwards and regress from Reagan by accepting a more liberal Republican from here on out.
I say no to that!
