Citizens are crowded out of universities

In states like Arizona, where the law forces employers to verify the legal status of employees, reports from news services like Reuters are reporting that, according to Mexican consular sources, there is a spike in the number of immigrants applying for Mexican citizenship for their U.S.-born children, “which will allow them to enroll in schools in Mexico.”
Does it alarm you to know that illegal immigrants know the law of their own country; that is, their children must be citizens of Mexico to attend Mexican schools? Yet, here in the United States, we don’t require similar qualifications.
Legislation that I have offered this year is not stronger than Mexico’s — it’s the equivalent. My legislation says that if you are enrolling in one of our taxpayer-subsidized Tennessee colleges or universities, you must prove your legal presence in this country.
And while proof of citizenship isn’t targeted to the Hispanic community, I raise the issues of Mexican citizenship because they do represent a large majority of the illegal immigrant community.
