David Frum’s latest book entitled Comeback: Conservatism That Can Win Again gives me cause for both hope and concern over the future of the Conservative movement. While I certainly cannot take issue with Mr. Frum over much of what he has to say, every now and again he does slip and fail to offer truly conservative ideas as solutions even after he has made an excellent case for them by providing facts and figures footnoted out the wazoo. Boy, I hate it when that happens because it can really detract from an otherwise good book.
What I liked:
Comeback: Conservatism That Can Win Again is choked full of pesky and relevant facts that are sure to drive any liberal confronted with them to tears. From start to finish the book is well documented to the point where the only way anyone on the left can argue with most of it is to simply yell over anyone citing in and basically filibustering. It hits many of the major issues confronting America today.
What I didn’t like:
Comeback: Conservatism That Can Win Again every now and again shows me that David Frum has a tendency to slip into a casual acceptance of liberal canards. Examples include the promotion of the non-conservative and non-libertarian view that states should be able to require you to carry insurance (health, auto, etc.) and also the fallacy that there simply isn’t any more room to give the middle class more tax cuts. I don’t know what world he lives in, but when the middle class is paying a marginal rate of 25% I’d say there is room to cut it. He also promotes a carbon tax.
Overall:
Frum’s book is very good except for when it lapses into promoting government control over liberty here and there like in these examples.
All in all, even with the flaws, if there was a candidate out there that was holding up this book and saying, “This is what I believe!” he or she would get a lot of conservatives to vote for them in November because it would be a good first step in getting America back on track and better than any other option out there. But they’d have to be watched- sort of like a John McCain.
Definitely worth a read (for the facts). It is not very long and another weapon to put in your arsenal. Just ignore his lapses into agreement with liberals.

On topic and intelligent comments are always welcome as are humorous observations. But liberal talking points with no basis in reality, off topic comments, spam and advertisements are not. Even though you may think you are an intelligent liberal, you probably are not. Keep this in mind as trolling is prohibited and will result in your comments not being approved and comments informing us how much we are a bunch of idiots because you say we are or espousing hate towards the truth are often moved directly to the official “I Hate You/You’re An Idiot” thread. Save us all the time and post there directly if you have a comment that would meet those criteria. Commenters reserve the right to mock claims about how liberal ideas, such as higher taxes, actually work and how conservative and right wingers, are NAZIs, racists, sexists, etc. and will do so with great regularity.
