305,586,080 is the current estimated population of the united states as of today from the Census Bureau Home page. 481 cases even if they all were because “dem damn muslims drove planes into our buildins” and provided each case involved one ‘extremely patriotic american’. You can factor 481 into our population 635314.0956 times. Now figure out the volume which your hand can hold(handful) vs the size of your body (population of US) and i’m sure we’ll come to the conclusion its much larger than 1/635314. Oh, and by the way, if you want to argue that these incidents involved more than one person, go ahead and assume that 20 people were involved and were still looking at 1/31765. Again, have a nice day.

Of course real incidents of crime – regardless of motive should be prosecuted. But what happened after 9/11 was any time a Muslim was the victim of a violent crime it was often a good assumption that it would be claimed as a “hate crime” even if the fact the victim was Muslim was irrelevant.

In 2001 there were 481 incidents listed as “hate crimes” against Muslims. That means, if every single one were an actual “hate crime” this is about 1.7X10-4% of the population involved in such an act. Hardly worth condeming America over.

The statement by Obama was classic fear mongering and political pandering and nothing more.

To start with, his attempt to portray America as this deeply xenophobic nation where all sorts of “detentions” and “hard stares” where being visited upon people who even looked like they might be Muslim in the wake of 9/11 is false. People have been looking high and low for rampant behavior like this and have found a handful of cases where people were treated as such.

Second, he attempts to throw in the internment of the Japanese during WWII which I would like to remind everyone was done by someone that he admires … FDR.
