School Room Fascists

Fascism is defined as “a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control” or, in a nutshell, arbitrary and capricious governance over people. So let’s talk about the story of a young boy suspended from school because a school administrator didn’t like his hair cut:

PARMA, Ohio - A kindergarten student with a freshly spiked Mohawk has been suspended from school.Michelle Barile, the mother of 6-year-old Bryan Ruda, said nothing in the Parma Community School handbook prohibits the haircut, characterized by closely shaved sides with a strip of prominent hair on top. The school said the hair was a distraction for other students.

“I understand they have a dress code. I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination,” she said. “They can’t tell me how I can cut his hair.”

An administrator at the suburban Cleveland charter school first warned Barile last fall that the haircut wasn’t acceptable. The school later sent another warning to her reiterating the ban.

Of course when you have open-ended rules that allow you to claim the mohawk violated rules against being properly groomed (the school’s defense) you are going to have little fascists doing whatever they want.

It doesn’t matter if what he did wasn’t actually against the rules. What matters is that they have the power to arbitrarily determine what does and does not constitute being properly groomed. And you will always have people that crave power drawn into positions where they can inflict their will on others.

Hopefully he and his mother will learn from this experience and work against having people in such positions of power in the future. Now, thanks to this administrator, the school will have to define exactly what sorts of haircuts are acceptable. But just remember, “Vee hav vays ov making you conform!”
