RSSOfficials: Illegals in prison cost county

WILKES-BARRE — Illegal immigration is adding to the rising number of inmates at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility. Earlier this month, U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Philadelphia, visited the prison to help prepare legislation to address the rising number of criminal aliens in U.S. prisons. Specter said the federal government is responsible for criminal aliens and should do more to help state and county prisons. “And it puts quite a burden on the county, which ought not happen,” Specter said. “The immigration problem is a federal problem.” Incarcerating undocumented prisoners costs Luzerne County about $1 million a year, county Commissioner Stephen A. Urban said. Each inmate in the prison costs about $85 a day, and the prison spent a total of $25 million last year.
