McCain talks immigration on state stop

INDIANAPOLIS – Hoosiers welcomed presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain on Friday but weren’t afraid to pepper him with hard questions in a town hall meeting. McCain roamed the stage while talking largely without notes for the first 30 minutes of the event, then opened up the session for questions. The first one came from a woman who noted that individuals are being lost in the debate over immigration and said her husband is being deported. “Is there any way to help our family out?” she asked, putting the Arizona senator on the spot. He responded by saying that he would look at any humanitarian or compassionate issues but the message is clear that Americans want the borders secure. McCain also said that Indiana isn’t the only state struggling with an illegal immigration bill in the state legislature. “I understand why states including my own have enacted legislation; it’s happening all over the country. It’s because the federal government has failed in its responsibilities,” he said. “It’s a federal issue, so now you see a patchwork kind of a situation, which is not good. It’s not healthy because it’s a federal responsibility.”
He promised to sit down with Democrats and fix the problemwhile focusing on the principles of securing borders, deporting illegal immigrants who have committed other crimes in the U.S. and punishing employers who hire illegal immigrants.
