KS: Immigration Discussions Heat Up Senate Hearing
Carolyn Hileman - The Voice* | February 28, 2008
Supporters of state-wide immigration reform told a senate committee Wednesday that the sunflower state has become a magnet for illegal immigrants. Oklahoma and Nebraska have recently passed bills similar to the one discussed Wednesday. Supporters say because Kansas is the last to act, the state seems to attract illegal immigrants. In 2007, there were 90,000 illegal immigrants in Kansas. Senator Peggy Palmer says there’s an easy explanation to such a large number, “A lack of enforcement laws, access to state-funded welfare benefits, in-state tuition, lack of verification of legal residency and failure to hold employers accountable.”
