Illegal immigrant arrested after almost hitting police car

CATAWBA ISLAND — An illegal Mexican immigrant was arrested Wednesday after his mini-van nearly hit a police cruiser on Northeast Catawba Road, an officer said. Jahir Laredo, 25, Columbus, was charged with driving without a license and marked lanes violation, said Lt. John Gangway of Catawba Island police. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has detained him and will determine whether to deport him. The incident happened at 1:42 a.m. when Laredo was southbound in the 1800 block of Northeast Catawba Road. His 1999 Ford Windstar crossed the center line and forced a northbound police cruiser off the road, Gangway said.
