DNC Files Suit Against McCain for Spending Limits

(CNSNews.com) - The Democratic National Committee filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Monday claiming that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) violated spending limits associated with receiving matching public campaign funds. Political experts, however, noted that candidates who receive public funds are at a disadvantage due to the large sums spent in campaign politics. The DNC filed its complaint alleging that McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, “has exceeded or is about to exceed the approximately $56.8 million spending limit.” Because McCain initially requested matching funds, he may be subject to the $50 million spending threshold to receive public matching funds. McCain had initially said he would accept public funds, but in a letter to the FEC on Feb. 8, he withdrew his request. The FEC is reviewing that request. Full Story
