Dems Losing Ground In “Generic” Ballot
J.J. Jackson* | February 23, 2008
Personally, polling people on generic ballots containing generic Democrats and generic Republicans is probably the dumbest thing I can think of doing since people will just vote for the party they like best and create their ideal candidate to justify that vote. Even if such a candidate doesn’t exist in that party. Its the “feel good” about something based on nothing option.
But Rasmussen does it anyway and interestingly enough the Democrats are slowly losing ground:
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that, if the Congressional Election were held today, 44% of American voters say they would vote for the Democrat in their district and 40% would opt for the Republican (see crosstabs). That’s the first time the Republicans have reached the 40% level of support in more than a year. It’s also the second consecutive month that the Democrat’s advantage has been in single digits. A month ago, Democrats enjoyed a five-point lead. Two months ago, they had a ten-point edge over the GOP.
If the trend continues through November and bears fruit, you could see Republicans regain some of the ground they lost in the 2006 mid term elections.
This could also be a side effect of the discontent we are seeing with the Presidential candidates voters are being given a choice of this year. Nothing would stop each of these liberals (Obama, Clinton or McCain) from getting their way better than making Congress more conservative. Problem is, the GOP certainly isn’t very conservative for the most part.
