Conservatives Send Message To McCain & GOP

That message is that McCain is not their man reports Fox News in their coverage of the CPAC Straw Poll:

Mitt Romney, who dropped out of the Republican presidential race on Thursday, won a straw poll of conservative activists on Saturday, edging out likely nominee John McCain.Ballots for the straw poll conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference were collected Thursday morning through Friday afternoon. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, quit the race in a midday speech to the conference on Thursday.

In the straw poll vote, Romney got 35 percent and McCain 34 percent. Mike Huckabee and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas tied with 12 percent.

This mirrors what we have seen in the T-shirt Straw Poll as well where Romney and other candidates are still selling well despite being out of the race. It is pretty bad when you can’t even beat a guy who technically isn’t even running any more.

Romney would appeal to the broad base of conservatives and moderates. I have reservations regarding his apparent “death bed conversion” to his pro life position for political purposes. I say “apparent” but it may be sincere. But I am disgusted with Huckaby’s religious bigotry, anything goes to win the election campaign. He demonstrated his lack of character in his dishonest attacks on the good mormon people. Losing one’s integrity is a terrible price to pay to win an election. I would not work for a ticket that included Huckaby. Romney espoues conservative values, and he has a wealth of experience in turning organizations around and making them successful. We need that in Washington.
