Time For A Revisit Of Why I Support The FairTax

J.J. Jackson* | January 8, 2008

I want to correct some misconceptions that people who write me emails seem to like to throw around concerning my support for the FairTax.  Seems every time I mention it I get the same typical, canned and uninformed responses in my email box.

There are a couple reasons why I support the FairTax and one of them is not that I like the government taxing us up the ying yang. Another is not that I support the unconstitutional federal spending that the FairTax would enable to continue (i.e. Social Security, Welfare, Medicare, etc.). Both of these are accusation that are hurled at me in emails by people who don’t listen very closely to what I have to say and have their own agendas (Generally supporters of the “Flat Income Tax”).

So why do I support the FairTax?
1) Taxation of income is a terrible thing and the government should not be allowed by we the people to take money from our paychecks BEFORE we have a right to it.
2) I firmly believe that only when the American public has to literally see exactly how much they pay for taxes (i.e. each time they purchase a new item as under the FairTax) will they get upset enough over the amount to actually force the federal government to start reining in spending and cut unconstitutional programs.
3) I believe that the FairTax is the best way to accomplish points 1 & 2.
4) It eliminates the double taxation in that we currently pay taxes out of out paychecks and then on top of that we pay 20% to 30% worth of imbedded taxes on everything we buy which comes from corporations having to recoup the money they pay for their share of Social Security, Welfare, and other taxes. Under the FairTax you pay 23% on new items only and keep your entire paycheck.

Now that that is out of the way, what don’t I like about the FairTax?
1) The FairTax is progressive in that there is a class of people that still do not ultimately pay taxes (just like now) thanks to the “prebate” system that refunds taxes paid up to the poverty level. When people do not ultimately pay taxes, they have no concern about who tax money is spent.
2) That the “prebate” system as it sends a government “check” to every household every month courtesy of Uncle Sam. This is compared to only people on current welfare systems receiving such a “check”. I believe that this could further instill the government will take care of me, look at the nice check they gave me mentality in many Americans.

Please, before telling me what I “think” when writing me emails, make sure you actually understand what I think. It will mean I have to make fewer posts like this one and you wont look so stupid when I respond to you.

God I hate talking about taxes. The current income tax sucks because it taxes income but not really. It taxes fair compensation for one’s time which the IRS is finding out based on a recent case it lost! The flat tax still taxes income which is bad and the FairTax is still a progressive tax.

I don’t support any of them. At least under the current system, as bad as it is, the poor still pay into the tax system even though they don’t know it and thus have a stake in how tax dollars are spent although they act like they don’t. Under other systems out there that would be completely removed as an incentive to use to convince them to care about gov’t spending.

I’d support the fair tax if it didn’t have the prebate and made everyone have a dog in the fight of how govt money is spent.
