Fast Eddie Rendell Admits To Selective Enforcement of Drink Tax
J.J. Jackson* | January 27, 2008
Recently here in Allegheny County, the little Marxists in charge who think that someone else should bail out their failed social programs instituted a 10% drink tax on poured drinks. This was claimed to be needed to bail out the floundering mass transit system in the region which is too big, too bloated, pays bus drivers more than they are worth and doesn’t have enough riders and doesn’t charge enough per rider to actually make a profit. Sounds like typical government black holes huh?
Yep, people who like to have a beer will have to pay for the bus rides of another person. This is nothing unusual in leftist “think”. But you might be surprised to learn that Ed Rendell admitted something about the similar tax they have in Philadelphia.
One of the complaints of the tax, beyond the fact that people who drink shouldn’t subsidize someone else’s bus ride, is that the tax could affect businesses negatively especially considering that neighboring counties have no such surcharge.
The other day Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell admitted on KDKA radio during and interview that while the drink tax they imposed in Philadelphia hadn’t driven any local bars out of business, this was actually because the law was being selectively enforcedand only major chains and hotels were being targeted. Isn’t it great to know that your government is not treating everyone equally? Yeah – what a great way that is to live! Now you have to wonder what other laws are being selectively enforced and whether you will be held to account while your neighbor is not for the same offense.
Arrogance? Idiocy? I don’t know what drove Rendell to freely admit this. But equally offensive is that I have yet to find (as of writing this on Friday night) a single peep from the major news outlets.
Since when are elected officials held to account for much of anything? It is a rare day indeed when they are. And if Fast Eddy ran for office you’d still have people around here pulling the lever for him just because he has a (D) next to his name.
