CAGW’s multi-year grassroots campaign to mobilize and educate taxpayers about the excessive cost and threats to privacy posed by radio frequency identification (RFID) technology paid off when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released proposed regulations rejecting the use of RFID chips in state-issued driver’s licenses.  CAGW members generated more than 10,000 letters and e-mails to DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff in opposition to RFID chips, which have the memory to store detailed personal information that can be remotely accessed up to 20 feet away.  “CAGW activists successfully thwarted RFID-based licenses, saving taxpayers $4.4 to $8.4 billion and heading off a grave risk to privacy,” announced CAGW President Tom Schatz.  Read more about the DHS decision.
