(CNSNews.com) - When voters cast their ballots during Virginia’s Feb. 12 Republican presidential primary, they’ll be required to sign a document stating they intend to support the party’s nominee for president in a strategy one conservative leader called a “bullying tactic” but a nonpartisan election official dismissed as just “a piece of paper.”

On Monday, the State Board of Elections approved text to be included with the ballot that states: “You can vote in this presidential primary only if you sign and print your name to the voter pledge below. You will not be permitted to vote if you refuse to do so.”

The pledge says: “I, the undersigned, pledge that I intend to support the nominee of the Republican Party for president.”

“That’s it,” Shaun Kenney, communications director for the Virginia GOP, told Cybercast News Service on Thursday. “There’s no oath of undying fealty to the Republican Party, not even a set-in-stone agreement to vote Republican in the fall. There’s no first born involved. You’re not putting your house on the line. There’s no penalty.”

Kenney noted that Virginia does not require voters to register by political party, which means a person can decide on the day of the primary whether to participate in the Republican or Democratic election.

“In 2003, we had state senate primary contests where there was a significant - as in 30 percent or higher - crossover” with Democrats voting for the person they considered the weakest GOP candidate, he said.

On topic and intelligent comments are always welcome as are humorous observations. But liberal talking points with no basis in reality, off topic comments, spam and advertisements are not. Even though you may think you are an intelligent liberal, you probably are not. Keep this in mind as trolling is prohibited and will result in your comments not being approved and comments informing us how much we are a bunch of idiots because you say we are or espousing hate towards the truth are often moved directly to the official “I Hate You/You’re An Idiot” thread. Save us all the time and post there directly if you have a comment that would meet those criteria. Commenters reserve the right to mock claims about how liberal ideas, such as higher taxes, actually work and how conservative and right wingers, are NAZIs, racists, sexists, etc. and will do so with great regularity.
