Huckabee’s “Cross” Draws Ron Paul’s Ire

J.J. Jackson | December 20, 2007

For everything that Ron Paul says which I agree with, the man just can’t seem to wonder off the pool deck into the deep end every now and again.

Mike Huckabee doesn’t wish you happy holidays. He wants you to have a Merry Christmas. And keep the Christ in it, please. That’s the subtext – as well as the text – of Huckabee’s latest TV ad, which began airing this week in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. Wearing a red sweater, the surging Republican presidential hopeful looks into the camera, acknowledges America’s fatigue with political spots, then declares that, this time of year, “what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ.”

“God bless,” he says at the end, “and Merry Christmas.”

Asked about the ad on Fox News Channel yesterday, Ron Paul, a rival for the Republican nomination, gave a sharp off-the-cuff assessment. He quoted Sinclair Lewis saying that “when fascism comes to this country, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross,” then went on to tweak Huckabee for “using a cross like he is the only Christian, or implying that subtly.”

Talk about reading between the lines with a 100x microscope. Where Mr. Paul even gets such an assessment from the Huckabee ad is beyond me. It almost seems that he is playing to the hands of the radical fringe supporters who have anointed him savior of the Republic with such off the cuff tripe and taking the oportunity to bash someone for his faith.

Of course there was no “floating cross” in the add.  What there was was a bookshelf partly obscured by a Christmas Tree and Mr. Huckabee which sort of looked like one.

There is plenty to criticize Mr. Huckabee on without kicking a hornets nest with a completely unrelated analogy to the situation. For a man that is supposedly so learned about America and our history, Ron Paul seems to have a great fear of anyone that uses Christian symbolism  and makes reference to their own faith based on his statements. I wonder if he would have been at the steps of the Capitol shouting this same sort of mantra when the founding fathers were using the building for Sunday services?

Comments like these are why Ron Paul is not accepted by conservatives and libertarians as a whole.

I’d be more worried about fascism coming to America across and unsecured boarded and carrying a Koran more than what form Paul thinks it will appear in.

Mr. Paul seemed almost reasonable the other night on Glenn Beck’s show. Someone has obviously been whispering in his ear over his America is to blame rhetoric.

    Then this.

I noticed that too. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one. None of the normal angry “It’s our fault” rhetoric.

I just think Ron doesn’t think before he speaks and that isn’t a good trait for a CiC.
