CCAGW Unveils Earmark Reform Pledge

CAGW* | December 8, 2007

In an effort to improve and expand upon the transparency and accountability rules that now govern earmarks in Congress, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) this month unveiled a new Earmark Reform Pledge alongside members of Congress and other taxpayer watchdog groups.  CCAGW is asking legislators to sign a 10-point pledge, which commits them to disclose all earmarked funding or targeted tax benefit requests on their congressional websites; not to request any earmarked funding or targeted tax benefit that does not serve a federal interest and/or have a federal nexus; and to support legislation that would end the linkage between campaign contributions and earmarks, among other provisions.  Joining CCAGW President Tom Schatz at the press conference were Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Reps. John Campbell (R-Calif.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), Tom Price (R-Ga.), Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), and John Shadegg (R-Ariz.).  “The members of Congress here today are leaders in the effort to reform the earmarking process.  We are grateful that they are the first to sign the pledge and hope more will join them,” announced Schatz in unveiling the pledge.  Tell your Representative and Senators to sign the Earmark Reform Pledge today!
