On border security
Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., voted in 2006 for 700 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border. He has questioned other candidates’ commitment to border security. This issue is central to Tancredo’s presidential campaign.

On immigration overhaul
Tancredo was a leading proponent of a 2005 House bill that would have stressed border security, forced employers to verify the legal status of their workers, and deemed illegal immigrants and their families in the USA as criminals. He was a vocal opponent of the Senate’s version of the legislation, which focused on creating a “guest-worker” program and a path to citizenship for many of the illegal immigrants in the USA.

In 2007, Tancredo opposed the Senate’s comprehensive immigration bill, which focused on eventually granting legal status to many of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the USA. He called that amnesty. Tancredo said the United States needs to enforce existing laws. On his campaign website, Tancredo also said he wants to reduce legal immigration to the USA by 75% “which will allow the newcomers to assimilate.”
