Here Comes the Goose-stepping!

Ve hav vays ov makink you agreez vif us.

The parents of more than 2,300 Prince George’s County students who failed to get needed vaccinations could face fines of $50 a day and up to 10 days in jail if their children do not meet the state’s immunization requirements, county officials said yesterday. The threat of legal action is a last resort after months in which Prince George’s has struggled to get its 131,000 students immunized for chicken pox and hepatitis B, as mandated by the state. More than 2,300 students have not been immunized and have been barred from attending schools, almost two months after a Sept. 20 deadline for meeting the requirement.

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way, but it’s got to get done,” Prince George’s State’s Attorney Glenn F. Ivey (D) said at a news conference in Upper Marlboro. “I’m willing to move forward with legal action.”

Yes, we all know the canard that its all about the children blah, blah, blah. But what this is really about is government exerting its control over the people. And sooner or later the people are going to have to at least threaten to shoot back. Litterally.

Liberals would cheer the parents of 2,300 children (approximately 4,600 people?) for disobeying the decree of government. But most normal Americans would find the act intolerable. It is the sort of things that revolutions are made of.
I personally like vaccinations. But there is absolutely no overriding public interest in the activity which warrants government involvement in the issue. We are supposed to have liberty in this country. Not authoritarian control by nebby do-gooders who think they know what is best.

What’s next? Is the government going to decide that if you don’t strictly adhere to the “food pyramid” and feed your children exatly what they recommend every day will they fine you and threaten you with arrest?

I hope that these families sue the pants off the government officials and bankrupt their liberal “utopia”. That would be justice.

    I disagree, J.J. If the parent(s) sign a
document indemnifying the state from all legal
action, then their kids can risk the disfigurement from chicken pox or the need for a
    liver transplant.

Ok then, should they also have to sign a waiver for everything else their child could possibly get hurt by too? Riding the school buss? Getting off the school bus? How about having to put on a full body pad suit before recess?

You’re not making an ounce of sense. The kids getting the chicken pox is not the concern of the state or the the state run schools any more than, like Jeff said, whether or not they are getting fed some arbitrary diet that could be dreamed up.

Sounds to me like you are an excuse maker looking to promote the Nanny State.

I agree PM, Mark’s statement makes no sense and it seems in an effort to justify arbitrary control. The school now apparently has some special power to grant special permission for the child not to be vaccinated? The school is not the kid’s parent which is the entire point.

So in Mark’s world, the kid must apply to the school and the school must approve the waiver so the child can not be vaccinated. Which is simply the addition of an addition bureaucratic step to the process. Something liberals love; inserting a middle man. When the correct process is simple in that the parents decide not to vaccinate.

Apparently liberty is missed on some.

I think Jeff summed it up perfectly by saying this:

“What’s next? Is the government going to decide that if you don’t strictly adhere to the “food pyramid” and feed your children exatly what they recommend every day will they fine you and threaten you with arrest?”

Arbitrary and capricious government gets out of hands when the libs are involved. I don’t need permission from some bureaucrat to raise my children in a manner than they deem “unfit”. Today its vaccinations. Tomorrow it is what food them eat. Then the next it is getting a $50 fine because I dared teach them that Mrs. Pollywinkle the science teacher was wrong when she said the polar bears were drowning because of Global Warming. On and on.

    “I disagree, J.J.”

And I disagree with you Mark. What you said has nothing to do with whether or not the parents “indemnify” the state by signing a waiver. Unless the state is running around with some sort of secret program to give the children chicken pox that is. So how would the state even remotely be responsible if and WHEN it happens.

Millions of children each year get CHicken Pox and there aren’t legions of disfigured teenagers running around.

    Amen Dina.

I didn’t get shot at in the jungles of Vietnam to have little tyrants here at home take away my liberties.

    I suppose I should have said I didn’t want
ignorant parents suing the taxpayer and saying
    “Nobody told me.”
