Edwards Puts His Authoritarian Foot Down

Just listening to liberals stump for votes gives them away:

John Edwards’ second TV spot in his make-or-break state of Iowa focuses on healthcare and his sort-of-angry populism. The ad, which will begin airing statewide later today, shows him on the stump pledging to take away health insurance from himself, senior presidential appointees, and members of Congress if they don’t approve universal healthcare by July 2009 — six months after he hopes to take the oath of office as president.

The video of the incredibly arrogant ad can be viewed at the link provided.

The question to Mr. Edwards is exactly what “power” as President he refers to? Congress passes laws. Presidents can only veto them. Congress can then override them. Then the courts decide on their constitutionality (often incorrectly) if it gets pushed that far. Ultimately however the President can simply refuse to uphold laws so contrary to the Constitution that the other branches may affirm.

But Congress taking compensation for their services is Constitutional. Article I, Section 6 of the Constitution says that “The Senators and Representatives shall receive a compensation for their services, to be ascertained by law, and paid out of the treasury of the United States.” Do I personally believe that they should have health care insurance as part of their compensation? No. Not really. Do I think that Congress is generally OVER compensated for their service? Yep. But again, what “power” is Edwards going to use?

And what other authoritarian powers is he going to create for himself if, God forbid, he were to be elected President?
