CCAGW Scores Two for Taxpayers!
CAGW* | November 5, 2007
Thanks to the grassroots clout of our members and supporters, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) this month scored two major victories in the battle for smaller, less costly government. On October 18, the House of Representatives sustained President Bush’s veto of the proposed expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) by 13 votes. CCAGW members sent more than 10,000 e-mails and letters to Congress and President Bush in opposition to the SCHIP expansion, which would have increased the cost of the program from $25 billion to $60 billion over five years and shifted the financial burden for 2.8 million children’s health insurance from the private sector onto American taxpayers. After another CCAGW blast e-mail campaign, both the Senate and House approved a seven-year extension of the Internet tax moratorium just before it was set to expire on November 1. While CCAGW pushed for a permanent ban, the seven-year moratorium is better than the four-year extension originally passed by the House, or worse still, allowing the moratorium to lapse altogether, opening the Internet to aggressive taxation.
