Tell Your Rep.: Sustain the Veto of “HillaryCare”!

CAGW* | October 14, 2007

It’s urgent that you tell your U.S. Representative TODAY to sustain President Bush’s veto of legislation that would expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)!

Let me explain why.

After the failure of Hillary Clinton’s plan for a Canadian-style, socialist healthcare system in the 1990’s, the universal healthcare proponents have wised up.  They know they can’t all at once impose a government takeover of America’s healthcare system - which will trample our individual choices, undercut our liberties, and force massive tax increases - without provoking a resounding public outcry.

Instead, they’ve adopted an incremental approach, where they will slowly expand existing government healthcare programs until they crowd out private insurance.  Before Americans fully realize what is happening, Senator Clinton and her allies will have nationalized healthcare “step by step on the sly,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

That’s why under the guise of helping children without health insurance, the HillaryCare proponents have enacted a massive expansion of SCHIP - more than doubling the cost of this program for you, me, and all taxpayers!

Originally designed to help low-income families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid gain access to health insurance for their children, SCHIP currently covers families earning up to 200 percent of the federal poverty line, or $40,000 in annual income.

The legislation vetoed by President Bush would expand coverage to families earning 300 percent of the poverty line, or as much as $61,950.  Many of these children already have private health insurance, and the SCHIP expansion, which would push the cost of the program from $25 billion to $60 billion over five years, would shift the financial burden from the private sector onto American taxpayers.

To pay for the increased spending, the legislation raises the federal cigarette excise tax by 156 percent.  Trust me, this will be just the first of many tax increases to come as SCHIP, like virtually every other entitlement program before it, ends up costing more than expected and sucking up growing amounts of your tax dollars!

President Bush was right to veto this budget-busting first step toward nationalized healthcare.  However, the Senate already has enough votes to override his veto, and our last line of defense is the House of Representatives, which is expected to vote on October 18.

Please tell your U.S. Representative TODAY to vote to sustain President Bush’s veto!

Sincerely,

Thomas A. Schatz
President

P.S.  As I’ve said, the House of Representatives is our last line of defense against those who see this SCHIP expansion as the first step toward making their vision of a socialist, Canadian-style healthcare system a reality in this country.  Please help us get out the truth about the motives behind the SCHIP expansion and stop the HillaryCare advocates by forwarding this message to your friends, colleagues, and neighbors.
